Legislator Wieder Considers Running for the NY Assembly in Rockland County

By Sarah Morgenstern

Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder is seriously considering running for a seat in the New York state Assembly in the newly-drawn 97th district.

While the sizeable Orthodox Jewish population of the 97th district was previously split three ways, the state’s redistricting has created a Rockland County district that now boasts a significantly larger number of Jewish voters.

The new composition of the 97th district makes Wieder, who is a Democrat, a serious challenger to beat the current incumbent, Mike Lawler, who is a Republican.

“Legislative districts should represent communities of similar interests, and we worked for the past year to make the case that these Orthodox communities of interest need to be united,” David Greenfield, a former City Council member, who now serves as the CEO and the executive director of the Met Council told Hamodia. “It’s a significant achievement that the Orthodox community of Monsey now has a seat they can run for and win.
