High Radon Levels in Many Hudson Valley Homes

Rockland Daily Staff

January is National Radon Action Month, and it's time to raise awareness and take action.

In New York state, parts of the Hudson Valley and the Southern Tier have the highest radon levels, according to the New York State Department of Health Radon Monitoring Program. The EPA explains that radon isn't something you can see, smell, or taste but can be present at dangerous levels in homes. Radon is the top cause of lung cancer deaths in America for nonsmokers, claiming the lives of around 21,000 Americans annually.

Radon exposure is preventable by testing radon levels in your home to prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family.

The EPA recommends testing your home during National Radon Action Month, spreading the word, and encouraging others to learn about radon and test their homes.

While some states offer free testing, the NY Department of Health (DOH) says they do not currently have test kits available for purchase. According to their website, "you can purchase a short-term radon test kit from your local hardware store or through a radon testing laboratory such as Radon Testing Corporation of America, Alpha Energy, Accustar, AirChek, or EMSL." The DOH also provides a list of certified radon testers in your area here.
