Haverstraw Holds Gold Star Family Recognition Ceremony

Rockland Daily Staff

Rockland County held a Gold Star Family Remembrance Ceremony this week, honoring residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in support of the Gulf War and War on Terror.

A Gold Star Family is the title reserved for the family of military members who have died in the line of duty. Since 1936, the last Sunday of September has been designated to commemorate Gold Star Families.

The Gold Star Family label dates back to World War I when military families displayed service flags outside their homes. The flags featured a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces. The star’s color changed to gold if the family lost a family member in the war.

The memorial ceremony took place at  Congers Veterans Memorial on Lake Road in Congers after the original date was rained out on Friday, September 29.
