In what is being reported as a mass casualty incident in New Hempstead, a heimeshe school bus from Talmud Torah Nachlas Chaim Ribnitz went off the road on North South Gate Road this morning.  The bus crashed into the house on 37 South Gate Road, causing a minivan to turn over and a third vehicle to flip over alongside the house next door.

Twenty children were extricated from the bus and taken by Hatzoloh EMS to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injury, including two in critical condition and five being transported to trauma centers.

North South Gate Road has a very sharp curve with limited vision for drivers going around the bend. Two permanent speed bumps were installed in the fall near the accident scene, requiring drivers to slow down.

Electricity has been cut to the house, but damage to the structure has been reported as minimal.

The accident is presently under investigation by the Ramapo Police Department.

Updates to follow as they become available.
