Youth organizations, schools, and homeschool groups can apply now for a package of free seedlings through the Department of Environmental Conservation 2023 School Seeding Program. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the program closes on March 31 or seedling stock runs out, whichever comes first.

Participants will receive seedlings from the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery as well as guidance on how to plant and care for the trees.

The program's goal is to educate about ecosystems, and the valuable roles trees play in that system through planting and caring for tree seedlings. Schools and youth organizations are eligible to receive free trees or shrubs by participating in the educational program. 

Organizations that may apply include all schools located within New York State; any youth education-based organization; homeschool groups, co-op, or other homeschool associations, but not individual family homeschools. 

There is a limit of one application per school, homeschool group, or youth organization.

Applications must be submitted by March 31. Applications can be submitted either online or by mail. There is a limit of one application per school or organization.

Species available for planting include white spruce, red oak, and mixed shrub. The seedlings are 2 to 3 years old, about 4"-12" tall, and bare-root. They are light enough for young children to carry and plant. Shipment is by FedEx on May 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, or 10th only.
