Coyotes Spotted in Increased amounts in Hudson Valley

Coyotes have recently been spotted in the Hudson Valley in increased amounts raising concern to neighboring residents, especially the ones with small pets.

Coyotes are striking yet dangerous animals belonging to the dog species. Although they are of no threat to adult humans they tend to target small pets and children.

Officials noted that coyote sightings are not a rare occurrence in the area but advised local residents to take precautions and issued a series of tips to reduce the risk of a potential coyote incident.

According to the officials homeowners should never feed a coyote or make them feel comfortable in any which way and if one is approached by the intruder the way to scare it off is by showing aggressive behavior like throwing stones and making loud noises.

"The Eastern coyote can be found in rural farmlands and forests, and occasionally in populated suburban and urban areas," the DEC noted. "In most cases, coyotes avoid people as much as possible, however, if coyotes learn to associate people with food - such as garbage or pet food - they may lose their natural fear of humans, and the potential for close encounters or conflicts increases."

Containing garbage as much as possible is of course another way to keep coyotes away.
