Coordinated Cyberattack on Rockland County Clerk's Office Under Investigation by Feds

After a coordinated and widespread cyberattack on the Rockland County Clerk's office, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began investigations.

The Rockland County Clerk's office was notified on Tuesday that there might be a problem when Cott Systems software administrator detected potentially malicious files within the County Clerk's office on Sunday, December 25.

The office's work is paused until the computer system is deemed safe to use again. This includes title transfers, records searching, and home closings inconveniencing more than just the County Clerk's Office.

Cyber attacks have become a worrisome problem as of late, leading to the New York State Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes grant to include a new category in this year's funding application, allowing non-profits to request up to $50,000 in cybersecurity for institutions at risk for hate crimes.

When it comes to cybersecurity, prevention is key which is why experts recommend creating strong passwords, not clicking on links that aren't familiar, and setting up multi-factor authentication whenever possible.

A similar attack took place in September, causing extensive damage to Suffolk County's systems which took months to recover from after the County refused to pay the $2.5 million ransom demand.

The earliest the Rockland County Clerk's office will be online is Tuesday, January 3.
