Congressman Lawler Introduces the SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act

At yesterday's press conference in New City, Congressman Mike Lawler introduced the SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act, Lawler's first piece of legislation as a congressman.
The legislation would allow married couples filing joint returns to deduct up to $20,000 of SALT on federal income tax instead of the present $10,000 cap for those who file as single or married.
The SALT Marriage Penalty Elimination Act was introduced with the support of Rockland County Executive Ed Day, Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Orangetown Supervisor Teresa Kenny, Supervisor George Hoehmann, and Stony Point Supervisor Jim Monaghan.
The bill, which Lawler claims has bipartisan support in Congress, is intended to be part of a larger package called the Hudson Valley Affordability Pact which will include tax reform, banning congestion pricing, increasing domestic energy production, and addressing government spending.
"This has been a bipartisan failure, and we need a bipartisan solution to fix it," Lawler says. "I think this is a fair measure that we could take, and frankly, all of my colleagues should support, and I encourage them to do so."
