Congressman Lawler Announces $2.5 Million in Federal Funds to Mitigate Flooding in Clarkstown

Congressman Mike Lawler announced the approval of nearly $2.5 million in federal funding to address chronic flooding issues in the Town of Clarkstown.

The funding will go towards a project on Jeffrey Court, an area with chronic flooding in West Nyack and flooding issues that exist along the New York State Thruway. With the most recent appropriations package, the total dollar amount returned to NY-17 exceeds $38 million, which is more than what was brought back by the previous member of the 117th Congress as reported previously by Rockland Daily here.

This funding comes on the heels of the Army Corps of Engineers visiting sites in Clarkstown to begin assessing flooding issues that have plagued portions of the town in recent years, as previously reported by Rockland Daily here

“I’m thrilled that we were able to secure millions in funding to address chronic flooding issues in the Town of Clarkstown,” Congressman Lawler says. “With aging infrastructure and more frequent and severe storms impacting our community, I made it a priority to support critical infrastructure projects throughout the district. With this most recent appropriations package, I’ve returned more money to our district in one year than the prior member did in their entire term.

“Having a partner in government like Goerge Hoehmann has been incredible, and I’m thrilled we were able to bring back nearly $2.5 million in funding to help the Town of Clarkstown address flooding issues. I will continue to work with local elected officials in both parties to address the problems that our shared municipalities are facing.”

$2,100,000 of funding will be used for the Jeffrey Court Flood Prevention project, which will include constructing a levee and other drainage improvement tools in the Jeffrey Court area of the Town of Clarkstown. This project will provide long-term permanent risk reduction by preventing floodwaters from the Hackensack River from inundating several properties that currently flood during rain and storm events. 

An additional $375,000 will go towards the New York State Thruway Authority Clarkstown Flood Mitigation project in the Town of Clarkstown, where the New York State Thruway Authority will develop a scoping study to determine the best alternative to address flooding issues at Milepost 19.51 on the New York State Thruway in the Town of Clarkstown caused by the current culvert that diverts water away from the Thruway.
