Community Outreach Center and Town of Ramapo Launch Ramapo Safe Campaign

M.C. Millman

The Community Outreach Center and the Town of Ramapo have launched the Ramapo Safe Campaign, stressing the importance of wearing reflectors to save lives, especially during the winter when it gets dark earlier.

"Last year, we started our Ramapo Safe Campaign, focusing on various measures that individuals can take to enhance their safety," Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht tells Rockland Daily. "This time of year, as it gets darker earlier, we are emphasizing the importance of wearing reflectors while out at night."

Without a reflector, pedestrians are too often invisible to drivers, as further proven by the statistic that more pedestrian collisions occur during November through March from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. than any other time of year. Wearing a reflector after dark allows a driver traveling at 30 mph to see the pedestrian from 300 feet away instead of 30 feet away (if at all) should the pedestrian be wearing all black.

"The Community Outreach Center is proud to partner with the Town of Ramapo for this critical initiative," Rabbi Hersh Horowitz. Community Outreach Center's Executive Director shares with Rockland Daily. " We are on a mission to have 100% of the pedestrians out at night wearing reflector belts. Unfortunately, too many accidents and near misses occur daily because of people ignoring this simple step. By stressing the importance of reflectors, we hope people will take the mitzvah of v'nishmartem meod l'nafshosechem seriously. I thank Supervisor Michael Specht and the Town of Ramapo for supporting this campaign."

Free reflectors are available year-round for pick up during regular business hours at the Community Outreach Center located at 21 Remsen Avenue and from Ramapo Town Hall on 237 North Route 59.
