Clarkstown Residents Invited to Participate in Public Hearing on New Underground Electric Transmission Line

Orange & Rockland Utilities would like to build a new underground transmission line in Clarkstown, but before the New York Public Service Commission (PSC) decides whether to adopt the O & R’s proposal, the public must weigh in.

Burying electrical lines can eliminate fire hazards, accidents, safety risks, and power outages that are caused by raised lines that can be knocked down by high winds and heavy snow, according to scenic.org.

Besides making communities more visually attractive, burying electrical lines also reduces risks of health conditions caused by electromagnetic radiation and improves road safety by lessening the chances that drivers will crash into poles.

As the PSC determines whether to adopt, modify, or reject O & R’s proposal to create a new underground transmission line, the commission will consider input from interested parties and residents, who are invited to attend a public hearing on May 25.

The hearing will start with an informational forum at 1pm at the Allison-Parris County Government Buildings, which is located at 11 New Hempstead Road in New City.

At 1:30 pm, the public statement hearing will take place, and at 5:30 pm residents can attend another informational forum. At 6 pm, the public statement hearing is scheduled.

An administrative law judge will preside over the presentation of evidence and the gathering of public comments, as PSC representatives consider participants’ input.

Under New York state law, the PSC must first grant O&R a certificate of environmental compatibility and public need before the utilities company starts construction.

Residents who cannot attend can submit their comments online at www.dps.ny.gov, by clicking on "Search" at the top of the page and then entering "21-T-0569" into the "Search by Case Number" field or by calling (800) 335-2120.
