Car Thieves Crash into Police Cruiser: Suspects Still at Large

By Rockland Daily Staff

A police chase in Chestnut Ridge got messy when one of the fleeing vehicles crashed into a marked police vehicle.

Last week, Ramapo officials received a tip of suspicious vehicles in an auto shop parking lot on Red Schoolhouse Road.

According to News 12, two Audis thought to be stolen from NJ sped away when officers arrived at the scene. The two vehicles fled west on Red Schoolhouse Road, according to Detective Sergeant Michael Higgins of the Ramapo Police Department.

As the first cars were getting away, another suspect broke into a white 2023 BMW and drove it through a security fence. Police believe around five men total were involved in the robbery.

"The suspects got into the vehicle, stole it. They drove it into a security fence. After leaving the parking lot, they were observed going northbound on Red Schoolhouse Road, at which time a responding unit was going towards them, head-to-head, and the BMW struck our police vehicle," reported Higgins.

Ramapo Police said the chase had to be stopped to ensure public safety due to the aggressive driving and high speed.

According to News 12, the suspects will be charged with criminal trespassing and grand larceny if they are caught.
