Beware of Skimmers at Cash Registers

The Ramapo Police Department is currently investigating an incident involving a skimmer installed on a self-checkout cash register at Walmart in Airmont.

The skimmer was discovered today, but it is unknown when the device was placed on the register. Anyone who used the self-checkout register at Walmart is encouraged to check their credit card account for suspicious activity.

Skimmers are illegal card readers attached to payment terminals. The card readers grab data off a credit or debit card’s magnetic stripe. Criminals sell stolen data or use it to make online purchases. A credit card owner may not know the information has been stolen until receiving the credit card statement listing unknown charges or an overdraft notice from the bank.

The Ramapo Police Department suggests contacting your bank if you notice any suspicious debit or credit card activity.
