Beat the Heat: Cool Off with Refreshing Summer Drinks

By Yehudit Garmaise

You may lose your appetite as temperatures soar to the mid-90s, but cold, icy drinks are always a welcome relief and can revive your flagging energy.

1. Passion Fruit Cocktail: Can’t go wrong with that! Mix mint leaves, a bit of sugar, and a splash of lime juice together. Add 1 cup of passion fruit juice and ½ cup of vodka to the mixture and voila!

2. Cocoa-Almond Butter Breakfast Shake: Blend 1 c. milk, 2 T. Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, or Tahini, one frozen banana, 3 T. Cocoa Powder, and ice. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and mini-chocolate chips or cocoa nibs.

3. Berry Blend Smoothie: Blend 1 c. milk, ½ c. strawberries, ½ c. blueberries, two pitted dates, and enjoy!

4. Make your own Ginger Ale: Take your cold seltzer to the next level by making it into Ginger Ale: Add 1 cup sugar to a bottle of seltzer then add 1 T. finely grated ginger. Finish it off by adding a little lemon juice, and garnish with fresh mint leaves and lemon and lime wedges.

5. Iced Coffee: cannot be beat when the sun is beating down. Blend 1 c. cold milk, a handful of ice cubes, 1 T. instant coffee, and 2 T sugar. While Torani syrups and chocolate syrups can really turn up the flavor of your iced coffees, light sprinkles of cinnamon, nutmeg, or some cocoa powder also add taste and look elegant on top of your drinks.

6. Masala Chai: In India, where temperatures surpass 120 degrees, residents cool down with a delicious tea drink that they boil with cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and milk. Thankfully for us, Wissotzky makes Masala Chai tea bags, so we can just make tea, add milk or soy milk, and a little sugar, before refrigerating in a mason jar with a lid for a couple of hours.

7. Siesta Cocktail: For a refreshing cocktail, put tequila, ice, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and a bit of maple syrup in a blender and blend. Add a straw and a sprig fresh rosemary for a pretty garnish.

8. Tequila Sunrise: Drink this fruity, beautiful cocktail in a pretty glass on your porch, and you will feel vacation vibes. First, pour 1 cup orange juice and 1/2 cup of tequila into a glass over ice. Then, add a few tablespoons of Grenadine syrup, which will sink to the bottom. Do not stir because the pinkish grenadine will stay at the bottom, and the juice and the tequila will stay at the top to create a striking sunrise or sunset effect.  Garnish with a maraschino cherry, a thin slice of orange, and serve.
