BDE: R’ Duvid Pinchos Rosenberg, z”l

By Yitzy Fried

We are saddened to inform you of the passing of R’ Duvid Pinchos Rosenberg, z”l, the first talmid of the Satmar yeshiva to be born on American shores.

He was born and raised on a tradition of mesirus nefesh. His father would routinely lose his job for his unwillingness to work on shabbos and Yom Tov.

His father, Reb Mordechai, hailed from the town of Zidichoiv, in Galicia, and his sandak was Rebbe Aizik’l of Zidichoiv. He later moved to Sambor, where he was exceptionally close to Rav Uri of Sambor.

In 1912–despite his great hesitation to leave Europe—the Rebbe sent Reb Mordechai to America to attempt to establish contact with Sambor landsleit who had left for America.

While here, WWI broke out, and he remained stuck here until 1921. By that time, he realized it would be better to bring his family to America because Europe would no longer be a home for them.

Reb Mordechai invested himself into the chinuch of his children at a time when America's children were falling prey to the winds of assimilation.

He would recall his time in Yeshivas Rabbeinu Shlomo Kluger (later Yeshiva Ch’san Sofer), and entering the Satmar yeshiva where his first chavrusa was Rav Hershele of Spinka. He would relate the elevated moments in the presence of the Satmar Rov zt”l, and the way he became part of this group of this founding core of Talmidim who would serve as the foundation for a beautiful landscape of Torah Yiddishkeit in America.

The Levaya will take place at the home of the niftar, 133 Route 59, at 10:00.
