BDE: R’ Binyonim Wertzberger, z”l, Pillar of Viznitzer Chassidus

by Yitzy Fried

The Viznitzer chassidus around the world was plunged into sadness and mourning with the news of the passing on Shabbos morning of R’ Pesach Binyomin Wertzberger, a philanthropist and pillar of the chassidus. He was 71 years of age, and contracted an illness only two short weeks ago.

The niftar was the son of R’ Volf Wertzberger, a well-known Viznitzer chossid, who sent his young son to learn in the court of the Imrei Chaim of Viznitz. He took in the influence of the Rebbe, and would remain tethered with heart and soul to the Admorim of Viznitz for all his life.

Following the passing of the Imrei Chaim, R’ Binyomin became mekushar to his son, the Yeshu’os Moshe, and became his right hand in establishing the mosdos in Eretz Yisroel. In 2005, he was one of a group of philanthropists who purchased the enormous property where the Viznitzer Shul is being erected now.

In Monsey, he was the founder of the Viznitzer Beis Medrash for the followers of the Yeshu’os Moshe, and he funded the maintenance of the shtiebel throughout its existence. During any visits of the Yeshu’os Moshe to America, R’ Binyomin could be seen at the Rebbe’s side, and his beloved Rebbe paid a number of visits to his home.

In addition to his generosity at home and abroad, R’ Binyomin was known as a chossid and yerei Shomayim. He could be seen every morning at 3:30 in the Satmar Beis Medrash, spending the wee hours of the morning immersed in Torah and avodah.

Two weeks ago, the Viznitzer Rebbe celebrated the wedding of a grandchild in America, and R’ Binyomin was on hand to celebrate the simcha. Sadly, he fell ill shortly thereafter, and lost his battle in the wee hours of Shabbos morning.

The Levaya will take place at 10:00 Sunday morning at the Viznitzer Shtiebel, 21 Ronald Drive, and will pass by the Viledniker Shtiebel at 10:30. The niftar will be interred in the Viznitzer chelkah on Long Island alongside his father, R’ Volf.
