379 Polio Vaccines Administered in Rockland County Since Last Thursday

by M.C. Millman

After the Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) confirmed the case of polio in a resident last week, 71 people were vaccinated against polio at the first two clinics held by the RCDOH for the general public.

Thirty-nine people over 65 were included in that number, along with 30 people ages 20 to 64 and two people under age 20.

379 polio vaccines were administered countywide to Rockland County residents since the announcement of the outbreak. That number includes the doses administered at the first two clinics held by RCDOH.

The next RCDOH polio clinic will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Pomona Health Complex, 50 Sanatorium Road, Pomona (Building A).

Anyone unvaccinated, including those who are expecting, those who have not completed their polio vaccine series, or those concerned they might have been exposed, should get vaccinated. Individuals who are already vaccinated but are at risk of exposure should receive a booster, which will also be available at the clinics.

Rockland County residents can pre-register for a free appointment by walking in or pre-registering by clicking here or by calling 845-238-1956.

Polio vaccines are also available through local healthcare providers.

The New York State Department of Health reports that most Rockland County schools meet State vaccination requirements, with at least 98% of the student body vaccinated against polio. Earlier this summer, the RCDOH sent 3,000 letters to families whose children were not up to date with vaccinations.
